She is Professor Emerita and a distinguished graduate of the Physics Department at the National University of Colombia, holds a PhD in Physics from Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, and an Honorary Doctorate in Education from Khachatur Abobyan Pedagogical University in Yerevan, Armenia. She completed postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Arizona, USA, and Georgia Tech Lorraine, France. In 1989, she was elected an associate member of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, and in 1998, she was promoted to senior associate member. She is a Fellow of the international society OPTICA for her contributions to quantum and atomic optics and for promoting optics in developing countries. From 2008 to 2017, she served as Secretary General of the International Commission for Optics (ICO), chaired the Trieste System Advisory Group on Optical Sciences and Applications (TSOSA), and coordinated the UNESCO Workshop on Active Learning in Optics and Photonics (ALOP) in Latin America. He also served as a science officer for the International Science Council (ISC) Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, coordinating ISC activities in sustainable energy and disaster risk reduction in the region. She recently completed a diploma in energy innovation and emerging technologies at Stanford University and a dual-degree master's degree in renewable energy from Camilo José Cela University and the International Monetary Fund. She is a full member of the Colombian Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences.

She is currently the Vice Dean of Research at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of the Andes. She has worked with carbon nanomaterials for 20 years. During her doctoral studies, she developed the liquid-phase exfoliation method for producing graphene, a key factor in the development of applications for this material. Her current research focuses on the exfoliation of 2D materials for energy harvesting. She is interested in technology transfer and the advancement of women in science. She leads the Nanomaterials Laboratory at the University of the Andes (Colombia) and is president of the Humboldt Club (Colombia).

She holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Valle and a Master's degree in Physics from the National University of Colombia. She has been a Full Member of the ACCEFYN (College of Physics and Natural Sciences) since 2023 and is an Emeritus Researcher recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology. She was affiliated with the Physics Department at the University of Valle since 1975, led the Thin Films Research Group, and directed the Center of Excellence in New Materials (CENM). In 1990, she received the University of Valle's Distinguished Professor Award.

Current Academic Vice-Rector of the National University. Director of the Physical Systems Simulation Group at the National University of Colombia (UNAL), Bogotá campus. His research interests focus on numerical modeling and analysis of granular media, construction materials, acoustics, fluid mechanics, vehicular traffic, and statistical mechanics.
